Champagne: More Than a Festive Drink

Champagne: More Than a Festive Drink

"Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!" - Dom Pérignon

Who doesn't love champagne? Well, we have great news for you... It comes with a multitude of benefits. Champagne was considered a medicine to treat many ailments once upon a time. At the end of the 17th century, it was officially recognized for its health benefits, specifically digestive support, nausea, rheumatism, depression and skin conditions such as eczema.

And at the end of the 19th century, champagne could be found on French pharmacies' shelves, called “champagne hygienique”, and was often given in small doses to women who had just given birth or to patients post-surgery.

Drinking champagne can diminish the risk of heart conditions thanks to high level of polyphenols, known to increase circulation, according to a study lead by Dr Jeremy Spencer at the University of Reading in the UK.

Drinking a coupe of champagne per day is even said to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

So what's the science behind it? Every time we drink champagne, our brain and heart secrete ADH (an anti-diuretic hormone) which activates blood flow and encourages drainage.

Champagne also contains high levels of phosphorus, lithium and zinc which makes it a great anxiolytic with detoxifying benefits.

As we ring in 2022, we'll be cheersing to a lot more than the new year!
